I enjoy meeting the people who buy my art. Sometimes they visit me in the studio, or I am invited to see the painting hanging in their home, which is always a treat for me. When artists exhibit in commercial galleries, we don't often find out who the buyers are.
There are tax benefits to businesses who buy original artworks. The ATO considers the artwork in two ways - In the case of original paintings by professional artists that gain in value, they are considered to be an appreciating asset and capital gains tax will apply if they are resold. An artwork can also be deemed a tangible depreciating asset.
Those who have self-managed super funds are able to add artworks and collectables to their portfolios. The purchase of artworks must be recorded by the fund's manager within one week of purchase and the location of storage documented. The artwork cannot be stored, used or displayed in the private residence, however, it can, for example, be displayed in the foyer or board room of a business. Refer to your funds manager for more details.
There is a new copyright resale scheme that applies only from the second resale on of an original artwork in which the artist gets a resale royalty from the proceeds of the sale. Commercial Gallery owners can supply more details. This is a wonderful new law that will help professional artists to make a living from their art.

LIMITED EDITION ARCHIVAL PRINTS
Ciglee prints, (pronounced Gee-clay) are the highest quality print for fine art reproduction, and are the preferred choice of museums around the world. A Ciglee print uses acid-free, handmade paper (360gm Photorag) and lightfast pigments, ensuring the colours will remain vibrant. They are as close to the original as is possible, not only in colour but also in texture.
As with all artwork, prints must be kept out of direct sunlight.
To order a print a deposit of $150 is required. Some of the prints are available in sizes as large as the original artwork. The print will be mounted and wrapped in cellophane, and will take 2 – 3 weeks to arrive back here at the studio. Upon acceptance and final payment it will be ready for framing.

I do commissions occasionally both in my own style and realism. I do portraits, murals, paintings to commemorate special events or paintings for a specific site. I need to visit the site where the painting will hang to ensure it blends perfectly with its surroundings. I also need to interview the client for about an hour to make sure I have a clear idea of what the client has in mind, then it is double checked and an agreement is signed.
When I do a painting in my own style, I don't know how it will look when finished, so the painting is a process of discovery. My idea at the outset is often simple, such as the main colour will be blue and the subject will be horses. If the painting is to be realistic then I will know what the finished result will look like. The client is welcome to visit the studio but not until the painting is almost complete. I am happy to take a series of photos showing the work in progress.
I'm not enthusiastic about sending original paintings with ordinary couriers, although some artists have never had a problem, I have had a few glass breakages. They were covered by insurance but it is a big inconvenience going to pick them up and have them reframed and wait for the insurance etc. Our local courier service is Fastway Couriers 02 4967 3944.
I recommend using specialist art couriers as they have specially designed trucks and extra wrapping and padding. The drivers are well trained or are artists themselves so they have a good understanding of the frailties of artwork. I use Grace Fine Art Removals 1300 766 233. They are more expensive than ordinary couriers at around $350 from Raymond Terrace to Sydney or $190 from Raymond Terrace to Newcastle.
